I’ve been to Taiwan many times but it is only during my trip last October 2017 that I discovered this side of Taipei. 大稻埕 or Da Dao Cheng is the oldest district of the city. It used to be the heart of trade- the center of all the economic, political, and military happenings. Right in the middle of the old district is OrigInn Space, one of the few 民宿 (Minsu) in Taipei City. “Minsu” is Taiwan’s version of homestay or bed & breakfast. This type of traditional and homey accommodation can usually be experienced in provinces or far flung towns.OrigInn is definitely a hidden gem worthy of your discovery. Housed in a well-preserved historic building registered by the Taipei City Government, be ready to time travel back to the past upon setting your foot here. First off, instead of creating a normal boring “lobby”, the owners decided to convert the ground floor into a common area. And what a better way to make a common area way more interesting than making it into a cafe? You’ll notice that the lobby, which is a cafe, is also a shop filled with lots of well-curated interesting items. These were all handpicked by the owners and brought in from their travels all around the world!Vintage vinyl and records, original Italian Faema E61 espresso machine, and antique Scandinavian furniture- these are some of the interesting things you’ll get to play with and buy from the shop! Now, let’s take look at the rooms! Currently, OrigInn Space has a total of 4 rooms- each, unique from one another. There are two rooms on the 2nd Floor and another two on the 3rd Floor. This is the room right across the stairs when you reach the 2nd floor. It’s perfect for solo travelers and/or those traveling with 1 friend! Here’s the 2nd room on the 2nd floor. It’s also the room I stayed in for 2 nights. Contrary to high end hotels, you won’t see modern techie facilities here but instead, the room is filled with vintage items from the 1960s! This is my favorite corner of the room. It’s so chill!LOVE their vinyl players. They have a wide range of vinyl records to choose from so you’ll never run out of music to listen to the whole night!I really appreciate that there’s a mini sink in the room for guests to do simple rituals such as washing hands, cleansing face, and brushing teeth easily.Yes, you can see the busy street right across the window but worry not as noise cancellation earplugs are readily available by your bedside for you to have a peaceful sleep. However, I opted not to use them as I really wanted to “live in the moment.” After all, the street noise adds to the overall natural atmosphere. If you’re wondering where the restrooms of the 2 rooms are, they’re located a few steps away from the rooms. The shower area is shared (but it’s clean and very well maintained, so no problem on that). Then there are 2 private toilet rooms- guests renting the rooms in the 2nd floor get to take 1 each.Let’s go up to the 3rd floor! This is the 3rd room they have. It’s the sole room in the whole building that has its own bathroom inside. Finally, we check out their biggest room. This can already be considered as a “suite” as it’s really super spacious. This room is perfect for families traveling together!I stayed here for a night and I immediately declared to my self that I want my future room in my own house to have a ceiling as high as this one! The restroom for this room is also located outside but it’s a private one- so yes, no need to share 🙂Each room has a different set of vinyl player! How cool is that?Staying here truly made me appreciate the old Taipei even more. Love the consistent rustic and vintage touch all over the place!Aside from the very on-point design, the hosts are super friendly too. Taiwanese hospitality at its finest! Amazing design + quality service= memorable stay.
